7-Eleven ibon / Family Mart ATMs — widest international card acceptance in Taiwan, available nearly everywhere. Chunghwa Post ATMs also accept foreign cards.
Bring $300–500 USD to exchange at the airport or a bank on arrival as a cushion, then rely on ATM withdrawals for the rest — better rates than airport exchange counters.

Visa/Mastercard widely accepted at hotels, malls, and mid-to-upscale restaurants. Night markets and small local shops are cash-heavy — keep TWD on hand.
Japan (Sapporo/Hakodate) is more cash-reliant than Taiwan, especially at ramen counters, snack bars, and small shops. Withdraw JPY at a 7-Eleven ATM soon after landing.
Not customary in Taiwan or Japan. Don't tip at restaurants, taxis, or hotels — it can even cause confusion. High-end restaurants sometimes add a ~10% service charge automatically (check the bill) — that's not a tip, it's built in.
